What you should know about VictoriA Railway Hotel and Gerrards Restaurant
Built in 1896 we are both on the Invercargill Heritage Trail and a New Zealand Historic Places Trust Class 1 Registered Building. In 1907 the hotel was expanded with it's first major upgrade to cater for increased demand. The iron store was replaced by Smith’s Railway Hotel a corrugated iron and weatherboard building . Smith’s Railway Hotel was replaced by the present building and the new Hotel boasted 35 individual bedrooms single bed pub style rooms , horse stables and warehousing. The Railway Hotel was one of 16 hotels which closed its doors to drinkers on 30 June 1906, when prohibition was carried in Invercargill.
Restaurant and student accommodation continued to be in use until closure for restoration. The Victoria Railway Hotel was the recipient of the Invercargill City Council Environment Award in recognition of the work done in conserving this Invercargill landmark
Our twin rooms are fitted with a double bed, a single bed and include a spacious en suite. Our Gerard's Restaurant offers a packed service on Monday Thursday nights from 6 30pm to 8 00pm where the focus is conventional home cooked kiwi fare and is complemented with local beer and wines. Our cony, well stocked lounge Restrict and historical dining room are for the exclusive use of our in house guests.
